The Spirit of the Clan

June 2, 2009

Every group out there be it a band or a bike team generally can point a finger to an individual within the group that embodies the spirit of that group. Robert Plant the spirit of  Led Zeppelin, Ozzy embodied the dark soul of Black Sabbath, Anthony Kiedis is that man for the Red Hot Chill Peppers, and on and on – you  get the idea right.

Well the Clan is no exception.

Little Biker - Owen

Jeff Bryson is that guy, the spirit of the Clan – It was  many months ago now and he was talking about the Clan – although I believe it was nameless at the time . Jeff talked about a team that represented the fun of mountain biking -  no snobs -  a tent at the bottom of the race course where anyone was welcome. A team mechanic that would work on your bike simply because you needed a hand. The Clan has some great sponsors yet if you are sporting a fork from some other brand – the Clan first and foremost wants to be able to get you out on the course to ride – after all it’s about riding isn’t it. Of course expect to hear a bit about their sponsors and be sure to pass on that “spirit of the Bike” -  synonymous with the Clan.

The Act of the Clan  Spirit.

Last week the Clan was represented well on both sides of the country. Earlier in the day a Clan member at large, often going by the name Freeride Phil was racing in his category on Neds as part of the  North Shore Bike Fest and placed really well – riding a Demo  no doubt. Soon after Freeride Phil finished his run – 2 spots off the podium I should add.  Phil was off to the hospital to be with his son Owen – Owen was going in for surgery  to remove a sliver – and we are talking chop stick size sliver from his foot – and Owen doesn’t have a very big foot to house a chop stick.

Jeff must have been thinking about his little buddy Owen on his final run down Neds – Jeff ripped it up, made a quick appearance at the awards – to collect prizes and loot – and immediatly – PJ’s and all – went to see Owen. To cheer up our little biking friend Owen – Jeff handed over some of the cash – insisting I am sure that he spend it on bike stuff. Jeff also presented Owen the award “metal ” – A North Shore Bike Fest Second Place in the Pro category chunk of wood – careful Owen of the slivers. I mean  if  that doesn’t say good doodoo about Jeff and heaps about what he wants out of the Clan as far a attitude then you are just going to have to stop by and say hi at the next race – Check out the plaid wearing Clan for yourself – they are nice guys who ride bikes – simple.

This past week Buckwheat was busy building up the team bikes. He built up Nick’s and we sent it Greyhound to Calgary so he could have it by the weekend. Tyler and Brett came down Friday to get their new bikes and ride the Shore. Brett is a bit particular about his cable routing so he built his own while Buckwheat built Tyler’s.

We did a quick Ned’s run Friday night before it got dark just to make sure everything was tight. Saturday morn we went to Suspensionwerx to get our suspension set up and then we were off to Cypress. Just so we could make sure our bikes were dialed session ed Sex Girl to S & M a bunch of times before heading to Fire Hose and Family guy.

Tyler and Brett were giving away smiles.

Nick called me right before we started to head our Friday to tell us he rode the bike in the snow and it was wicked. I bet he wished he was riding with us this past weekend in the sun.

Origin of the Clan

March 26, 2009

Clan

A clan is a group of people united by kinship and descent, which is defined by actual or perceived descent from a common ancestor (Bikes). Even if actual lineage patterns are unknown, clan members may nonetheless recognize a founding member (Bryson) or apical ancestor. The kinship-based bonds may be merely symbolical in nature, whereby the clan shares a “stipulated” common ancestor which is a symbol of the clan’s unity. When this ancestor is not human, this is referred to as animallian totem. Clans can be most easily described as tribes or sub-groups of tribes.

The Gaelic term for clan is fine /finɨ/. In the 20th century, the word entered into use internationally in scientific descriptions of territorial and group behavior in various species of mammals, including hyenas, badgers and riders (Tyler, Brett, Nick and Jeff)

Organization of clans in anthropology

Some clans are patrilineal, meaning its members are related through the male line; for example, the clans of Armenia. Others are matrilineal; its members are related through the female line. Still other clans are bilateral, consisting of all the descendants of the apical ancestor through both the male and female lines; the clans of Scotland are one example. Whether a clan is patrilineal, matrilineal, or bilateral depends on the kinship rules and norms of their society. Our Clan is Bikrilineal, meaning we are all related through bikes.

In different cultures and situations a clan may mean the same thing as other kin-based groups such as tribes and bands. Often, the distinguishing factor is that a clan is a smaller part of a larger society such as a tribe, a chiefdom, or a state. Examples include Scottish, Irish, Chinese, Japanese clans and Rajput clans in India and Pakistan, which exist as kin groups within their respective nations. Note, however, that tribes and bands can also be components of larger societies. Our clan is a smaller group of the racing world.

Clans in indigenous societies are likely to be exogamous, meaning that their members cannot marry one another (that’s for sure). In some societies, clans may have an official leader such as a chieftain or patriarch; on others, leadership positions may have to be achieved, or people may merely say ‘elders’ make decisions (Nick J).

I can’t believe it, everything is starting to come together.  We have all our sponsors on board helping us out with the best products out there.   The Clan is riding hard getting ready to race this season.

Thank you to all our sponsors this year helping us out.  Its amazing the lengths our sponsors have gone for us considering this is our first year.  We have a lot to live up to.  Sponsors on board for this year are the Hayes Bicycle Group, Specialized, Chromag, Kali, Gamut,  John Henry Bike shop in North Vancouver, Evolve Fitness and Blackfootdirect.com.

I am super stoked that Myself, Tyler, Brett and Nick got together to ride this season.  I know for myself riding together as “the Clan” will up my skill on the race course, I’m sure they are thinking the same.
